Battery Blooms, December

Winter enters New York City. Frenzied holiday shoppers scurry about in the annual quest for talking toys, ringing and blinking gadgets, and boldly colored cashmere. Storefront windows shimmer and glimmer with strips of tinsel and strings of lights. Camera flashes ignite an already dazzling display at Rockefeller Center.

Understated combinations of brown and variations in texture and form predominate in the garden during this hectic season. Rust–colored stalks of astilbes are steadfast at your feet. Distinct clumps of a sandy–brown grass stand tall at the water’s edge. The white, papery leaves of hostas lie flat on the soil.

The winter rest begins.
