Education

Join us at the urban farm, oyster restoration station, beehives, perennial gardens or monument walk.

The Battery Conservancy’s educational experiences take advantage of The Battery’s rich history and biodiverse landscapes. These include a vegetable farm, a food forest of native plants, New York Harbor waterfront, toxin-free lawns, and the largest perennial gardens in North America that are free and open to the public every day of the year.

Programs are available for all ages. See below for more information about our programs for school groups, families, and individuals.

Field Trips

We offer field trips to students from Pre-K through High School.

Self-guided Field Trips give teachers the opportunity to explore The Battery with lesson materials covering agriculture, urban ecosystems, nutrition and history.  We provide a lesson plan and age-appropriate worksheets for classes to print and bring with them to aid their exploration of the park.  Trips are available every month of the year.

Staff-led Field Trips are 75-minute visits led by Battery Conservancy educators featuring hands-on experiences and mini-lessons on urban agriculture and ecology. Trips are available May through October for school and summer camp groups.

Please follow the link below to review our various trip options and sign up for staff-led and self-guided trips.  If you do not see a time that works for you, please check back at a later date or reach out to us by e-mail, as we often have new slots open up throughout the season.

Registration for field trips opens on the following dates:

  • March 15th: Registration for trips in April, May, and June
  • June 1st: Registration for trips in July and August
  • August 1st: Registration for trips in September, October, and November

Student Farmers

Select public school classes can experience The Battery Urban Farm with regular visits throughout the school year. Student Farmers follow plants from seed to harvest and study the seasonal changes on the farm, exploring the living organisms and earth cycles that make food production possible.  September-June for grades 1-3.

If you are interested in bringing your class for regular visits as part of the Student Farmers program, please fill out this form or e-mail us at: [email protected]

Stewardship Lab

In our Stewardship Lab, Middle and High School classes and afterschool clubs visit The Battery on a recurring basis for hands-on experiences in environmental management and park conservation, working with The Battery staff to maintain our public green space and grow food for donation to local food relief organizations.  Activities include the planting, maintenance, and harvest of our vegetable and forest farms, with opportunities to monitor the ecological health of our terrestrial and marine ecosystems.  Time commitments are flexible depending on group needs.  Available April through October.

See images from the program here.  If you’re interested in participating, please fill out the  Stewardship Lab interest form.
